Post-Event Information

The 2018 Castine Plein Air Festival saw bright sunny skies for the entire three day festival. Thirty juried artists arrived in Castine on Wednesday July 18th and enjoyed a reception at the Castine Inn with sponsors, hosts and volunteers. Over 150 paintings were produced over the next three days. An Artist's Reception and Art Sale was held at the Maine Maritime Academy's ABS Center for Engineering and Science. The reception was preceded by an awards ceremony. Prizes were awarded to the following:

First Prize to Michael Vermette of Indian Island, ME for his painting "Eaton's Boathouse at Dawn"

Second Prize to Chrissy Nickerson of Canmore, Alberta, and Cape Rosier, ME for her painting "View of the Bagaduce"

Third Prize to Roberta Goschke of Waldoboro, ME for her painting "The Little School House - Adams School"

Five Honorable Mention Awards went to:

Elizabeth Ashton Hallett of Brooklyn, NY for her painting "View of Blue Hill"

Alison Menke of Clarksville, MD for her painting "Summer Beech Tree"

Anthony Watkins of Bradley, ME for his painting "Harbor Nocturne"

Henry Coe of Parkton, MD for his painting "Boatyard"

Laurie Lefebvre for her painting "Red Ride"

Judges for the awards were Jill Hoy of Jill Hoy Gallery in Stonington, ME, and Josh Adam of Adam Gallery in Castine.

A special "Castine Captured" award was presented to the artist whose painting best depicted something of special essence in Castine. The award was given to Julia Durgee of Portland, ME for her painting "Castine Scene". The painting captured the white clapboard buildings adjacent to the Town Common, and focused on maintenance of a white clapboard church next to lush summer gardens in a picturesque waterfront town.

Judges for the Castine Captured award were CAA board members Ted Lameyer and Johanna Sweet.

Large crowds enjoyed the art and sales were brisk. The festival is the annual fundraiser for the Castine Arts Association which promotes literary, visual, music and performing arts in Castine.

Thank you to all of our sponsors, hosts and volunteers for making this year's festival a great success!

Our festival is gaining national attention! Here is an online story of the festival in Outdoorpainter.com.
